Summary
When you use the AI Chat tab in Zirp, the messages you type and any text you paste from a screenshot are sent to our servers and to our AI subprocessor, OpenAI, to generate replies. Before any message is sent for the first time, Zirp asks for your explicit consent and will not transmit anything until you accept. Conversations you save or bookmark are stored in your private iCloud account, which we cannot access.
Data We Collect and Process
Zirp does not require an account, email, or name. The data we process is limited to: (1) the messages you type into the AI Chat tab, (2) text extracted on-device from screenshots you paste or share into the app (the original image never leaves your device — only the text you choose to send is transmitted), and (3) the conversation history of the current chat so the AI can keep context.
Who We Share Data With (Third-Party AI Subprocessor)
Messages from the AI Chat tab are forwarded from our servers to OpenAI (https://openai.com), which generates the AI replies on our behalf. OpenAI is our only third-party AI subprocessor. Per OpenAI's API data policy, content submitted through the API is not used to train OpenAI's models and is retained only for a short abuse-monitoring window before deletion. We do not share your data with any other third party, ad network, or analytics provider.
Your Consent
The first time you try to send a message in the AI Chat tab, Zirp shows a consent screen that names OpenAI, lists what is sent, and asks you to accept. If you decline, nothing is transmitted and the consent screen will keep appearing each time you try to use the AI Chat tab until you accept. You can revoke consent at any time from the AI Chat tab; revoking consent immediately stops any further transmission.
On-Device Features
Discover, Bookmarks, opening-line decks, screenshot text recognition (OCR), tone rewrites, vibe detection, and the on-device practice/roleplay mode run entirely on your device using Apple's built-in frameworks (Vision, Foundation Models). These features do not contact our servers or OpenAI.
Data Retention on Our Servers
Our servers do not store your messages after a reply is returned. We log only minimal, non-identifying request metadata (timestamp, anonymous request rate-limit counters) needed to operate the service and prevent abuse. We never link your messages to you personally.
iCloud Data Usage
If you save a conversation or bookmark a line, that data is stored in your personal iCloud account. We do not have access to your iCloud data, and it is synced privately across your devices without passing through our servers.
Children
Zirp is not directed to children under 17 and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
